BMW “Condition Based Service” Schedule:

The BMW Maintenance System is designed to maximize your vehicle’s safety and minimize breakdowns. The Service Interval Light system indicates when a service is due. The onboard computer calculates this by using information it has gathered and recorded from your driving habits.

Service Interval System:

The service indicator lights located in your instrument cluster consists of five green lights, one yellow and one red (1999 on). It also has the messages “Oil Service” and “Inspection.” As time expires from the last service, the five green lights will go out one by one until the last one is out. After the last green light is out, the yellow light illuminates along with the message “Oil Service” or “Inspection.” The next service is due. If the vehicle is not serviced when it is due, the red light will illuminate after some mileage.

Inspection and Maintenance Plan:

BMW recommends a service be performed every 15,000 miles. The services rotate between three levels of maintenance. Services vary slightly according model.

*Each of these services has a particular list of items to be performed and checked. An Oil Service entails more than merely an oil change. An intermediate oil change is recommended between each of these services.

BMW History in Brief

Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) was founded in 1916 in Munich, Germany, by Franz Josef Popp.

The company’s products were motorcycles and internal combustion engines. During WWI it changed production to building aircraft engines. After WWI, under terms of the Versailles Treaty, it was forced to quit aircraft engine production.

The company switched back to building motorcycles in 1923. Between 1928 and 1929 it began automobile production. During WWII BMW returned to producing aircraft prop engines as well as a turbojet engine used in the Heinkel He 162.

In 1959 BMW bought the rights to manufacture the Italian Iso Isetta. The cars were powered by BMW’s own modified motorcycle engine. By the 1970s BMW automobiles were a major force in the German car line. Today they are among the best cars built.

*The blue and white BMW emblem is said by some to represent the circular motion of an airplane propeller as the white blades cut through the blue sky. A second explanation is that the emblem was meant to show the colors of the free State of Bavaria.
